Day 4 – Thursday

Waking up in Hong Kong on Thursday morning… You are all preparing to go to Church on Wednesday night.
We have a team headed to street ministry then to service at 2 pm. The other team will be going to other parts of the city. Then, tomorrow we will switch.
You would be so proud of all the team members, their singing, testimonies and worship. They were all singing in the choir yesterday, when the power of God fell and they all started going around laying hands on the church guests and visitors. What a great shower of blessing came over that service!
We are trying to load more pictures.
Thanks for all the prayers! Keep them coming! Still have much to do here!
Affecting the world together…

Trying to decide what to eat for dinner…

Our dinner selection - at the Chinese Fast Food court in the mall...

After about 28 hours of total travel – Finally arrived last night in Hong Kong!

Arrrival at Hong Kong airport - after about 28 hours of total travel -

We Have Arrived!

Dear Parents, Family, Friends and Church Families to all our 60 Youth On Missions Travelers.

Greetings from Hong Kong! It is now about 6 AM Wednesday morning – (6 PM Tueday night for those of you on the East Coast).

We all arrived well. Everyone very excited to be here – and if you saw the look on their faces at the airport, when I asked them if they wanted to wait 2 more hours to transfer to our next flight, then another 3 hour flight on to Bangkok (which was our original plan and original schedule) they were all relieved not to have to get on another airplane. The 16 hour flight was enough for them.
As Jonah was in the belly of the whale for 3 days and 3 nights, the 16 hours in the belly of that plane were enough for all of us!

Everyone arrived well. All our luggage arrived well. We checked in very quickly into our hotel, then headed out to get a quick bite at a food court in a modern mall close by the hotel.

After coming back to the hotel, and a quick orientation for today, they were all shipped off to bed – and no one complained! :-)

So… today (tonight for all of you on the other side of the waters)… We are meeting at 8:30 AM for breakfast in the hotel lobby. Then, at 9:30 am we head across on the world famous “Star Ferry” (you can look it up online), to Central, on the Hong Kong island. It sounds like a big deal, but it’s only a 5 minute ride. The big deal is the spectacular views of the city you get riding on the ferry!

Today is a holiday here, all the workers will be coming to the park-thousands of people! We’ll be joining with the Hong Kong Church for special Street Services and ministry there.

After lunch, we will be going to service at their central church. It’s a Church with mostly Philippine people, so they will all understand our “Engrish berry well.”

Tonight’s dinner will be at the top of the “Peak” – on top of the mountain, overlooking all of Hong Kong Harbor and the Kowloon side. There is a cable car to take us to the top and they will never forget this first day in Hong Kong. (Look it up online).

Thank you for your prayers. Everyone is so excited. These are the greatest kids! You would be so proud – and I know you are!

NOTE: If you’ve not heard from your “darling” by phone yet, do not panic! We have not made it to the store yet to get their SIM cards for their cell phones activated. At some point today, we hope to get them set up. Our hotel phones were not working for dialing international calls out. They can get your phone calls if you call them here.

Again, thank you for all your prayers – today we begin ministry, and Bro. Joel Andrus, of Delaware, will be our preacher in the service this afternoon.

We will be trying to post pictures and as much information as we can, as we know you are all standing by, watching your computer screens to see ANY news from your kids…

God bless you all – It’s an honor to be a part of this exciting Spiritual World Changing Adventure!

Hong Kong 2010

YOUTH ON MISSIONS 2010 INTRODUCTION TO HONG KONG:
On first acquaintance Hong Kong can overwhelm. Navigate its teeming, tightly packed sidewalks and you’re met at every turn with neon signage, steam-filled canteens, slow traffic and a Babel of chatter.
Hong Kong is a place to delight in. Safe and fantastically well organized, it offers little moments of perfection.

HONG KONG HARBOR AND SKYLINE:
Hong Kong is my absolute favorite big city in the world. It has a spectacular skyline, tons of public transportation, tons of scenery, culture, history, and an energy you can’t find anywhere else. It makes NYC and L.A. seem inconsequential.

HONG KONG IS WHERE THE EAST MEETS THE WEST:
You feel the all the excitement and splendor of the far east, and yet can still feel
comfortable in their western parts of the island. Hong Kong is part Island and part peninsula, so there are on both sides beautiful skylines with many neon signs reflecting on the beautiful waters. The views are breathtaking!

LOCATION:
Hong Kong is located on the southern part of China, and since 1997, it has gone back to being a part of China, however it has remained non-communist. It is the
Financial Capital of the Eastern world and the gateway to most of China’s exports for many years.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
The public transportation in Hong Kong is some of the best in the world. Best
organized and most efficient. Since their population is some of the most dense in the world, vehicle traffic is one of their great challenges. It is very congested. With their subway systems, ferries and trains, they are able to move millions of people every day in a fast and efficient way.

OUR AIRLINE COMPANY:
CATHAY PACIFIC is one of the top airlines in the world… Well… in fact, last year (and until now) it has won these following awards: Airline of the Year
Best Airline : Asia Best Airline : South East Asia And Hong Kong airport is rated the #3 in all the world!

YOUTH ON MISSIONS AND HONG KONG:
Hong Kong was actually where youth on Missions got started some 25 years ago! We began as “To China with Love” in a huge effort to get Bibles into China. Millions of people were affected by the many teams we took to Hong Kong and into China. I’m very familiar with Hong Kong and since having been there so many times before, we can sure enjoy all the many things they have to offer.

On June 30, 1997, Britain’s 99-year lease on the New Territories expired and sovereignty over Hong Kong reverted back to China. However, an agreement, which China and Britain signed on December 19, 1984, allows Hong Kong to keep its capitalistic system for an additional 50 years. Today Hong Kong enjoys a high
level of autonomy that includes freedom of religion. Hong Kong is a very pagan nation, given to much Eastern Religions such as Buddhism and Shintoism, etc.

THE MISSIONARY EXPERIENCE IN HONG KONG:
Our missionaries there, Bro. & Sis. Steve O’Donnell, have been friends for many, many years. They have been able to assist us with groups before and we’ve
traveled with them through much of China.
When the Stephen O’Donnells arrived in Hong Kong with the U.S. State Department in April 1984, they knew they were in God’s will. Even as Conquerors Bible College students, they both desired to work among Chinese-speaking people.
So while employed by the diplomatic corps, they worked as self-supported AIMers.
However, when the U.S. government planned to reassign O’Donnell to another location, they applied for full missionary appointment so that they might devote themselves full time to the work of God. They received their missionary appointment to Hong Kong in 1987. They were on location when Britain handed over Hong Kong to China, taking advantage of the situation to offer the hope of Christ to those who felt they faced an uncertain future. Stephen O’Donnell is also in charge of evangelism efforts in the People’s Republic of China. The UPC of Hong Kong now eight churches and preaching points.
7 Million people to reach!

Excited about Hong Kong

As you know, our trip to Bangkok was canceled due to Civil Unrest. It became too dangerous for a team like ours, so we had to re-locate the entire team in a matter of days. Our new location is great! My favorite city in the world! We will have special times for ministry and a lot of sightseeing!
We’ll try to keep you posted from here…
